About Mayuri

choreographer | dancer | artistic director of nrityarutya

Mayuri Upadhya is an independent South Asian choreographer, dancer, and Artistic Director
of Nritarutya, whose work has been presented internationally. Known for her innovative
approach to movement, she consistently pushes boundaries by combining classical Indian
dance forms with contemporary expression. Her choreography emerges from a deep
foundation in Bharatanatyam and Kathak, enriched by her explorations of folk traditions and
martial arts like Kalaripayattu and Chhau, creating productions that bridge cultural and
artistic boundaries.

She worked as both choreographer and artistic director for diverse productions ranging from
large-scale commercial events to intimate artistic performances. Her repertoire spans
prestigious venues across India and internationally, collaborating with leading artists,
designers, and cultural institutions. Notable among these are her work as Principal
Choreographer for the Broadway-style musical "Mughal-e-Azam" and the "Make in India"
ceremonies in Germany and Mumbai, where she directed hundreds of performers in
technically complex productions

Vision and Style

Whether in the realm of artistic or commercial work, Mayuri approaches each project with a unique perspective that challenges conventions and invites audiences into a dynamic interpretive experience. Her dual expertise allows her to seamlessly navigate between creating thought-provoking artistic performances and delivering high-impact commercial productions, all while staying true to her core philosophy of dance as a living, evolving art form.

My future will be defined by my ability to bridge these two worlds—creating immersive stage experiences that captivate live audiences while embracing the film medium to expand my storytelling reach. Through this balance, I hope to continue to evolve as an artist, offering both stage and screen platforms that challenge, inspire, and move people in profound ways.
